| The photos above were taken when Chinook was about 8 weeks old and those immediately below at 4 1/2 months old. Please read about Chinook below and be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page to see pictures of him as a young adult. One of these days I'll try to get newer pictures to show off how great this handsome fellow is as a fully mature male. Enjoy! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| We named this speedy, whirl wind of a kitten Chinook - partly in honor of his mother whose name is Breeze, but mostly because Chinook does mean something like "wind" in one of our native American languages. The native Americans had/have many words to describe weather with many words to differentiate between subtle differences. At any rate, Chinook is a little whirl wind and that's pretty much what the indian word "chinook" means. Although many kittens outgrow their baby names, this boy just never has been anything other than a refreshing Chinook. And so he is... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Although I just now came back to edit Chinook's page to update his title to Grand Champion, pretty much everything I read here is still 100% true. So I'm going to leave it untouched for the most part. He still decides that he needs hugs so quickly and so absolutely that he twitches from the tip of his tail to the tip of his tongue as he loudly chirps and bolts his way to the nearest hugger. He's a total riot with his tail all bushed out like he's just seen a ghost when all he really wants is LOVE. Absolutely charming and sweet, he's incredibly fast (even for a Turk!) and totally unpredictable. Sometimes I think that he thinks he's Superman with the stunts he pulls. But his favorite thing is to go for shoulder rides and he never extends his nails - what a good boy! And he's still so sweet and unstudly that he still gets to run loose with several other males in our spare bedroom. Although most whole males love to wrestle and will often scruff one another while they play which often starts up a fight (because most whole males just don't like to be scruffed and hence forced into submission by other whole males), Chinook is just so sweet toward the other boys that neither he or they have any issues with one another at all. I honestly can't say if any of them do scruff one another, but I seriously doubt it as this really is the one forbidden gesture between males. Come to think of it, adult females can't scruff each other either without a fight breaking out as this really is a VERY dominant gesture between cats unless the cat being scruffed is a female in heat or a wayward kitten who needs to be rounded up. This really is a gesture that only males are allowed when they are in fact breeding females as they hold them in place. But babies and jeuveniles do in fact scruff each other instinctively as they rough-house because they instinctively know this really is the best way to get the upper hand, i.e. the one place you can grab on where the other cat just can't get you! So for a whole male to instinctively AND from habit (from breeding) know this yet intentionaly NOT do it with his best buds really is remarkable. Especially now that Chinook is over 3 years old. He is by far the oldest in the group of rowdy bachelors and we couldn't think of a better role model for those younger pranksters. All is well with Chinook as the leader of the gang! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Our handsome boy has been away from home a few times over the years visiting ladies. Once he was away for an extended honeymoon visit which lasted several months and then quite recently he was away for a whirlwind two day romance with a female we placed with friends. We're thrilled to know that he was his purrfect self in our friends' homes, never spraying or doing anything to marr his fabulous image in our eyes regarding his temperament. And each time he returned home and fit right back in with his pals with no aggression toward them although surely with great tales to tell. As excited as his buddies were to see him and smell where he had been, Chinook was his charming wonderful self taking no offense at the overwhelming interest they showed him. What a great stud he is! I honestly can't rave enough about his wonderful personality or the way he has parented his buddies. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Better yet, we finally remembered to take him to a show this past February (2010) in hopes that he could finish earning the points he needed to become a Grand Champion. In all honesty, the only reason we had not done this is because he just IS and always has been Grand in our esteem. But it was long overdue nonetheless. And not only did he earn those last 35 points (+3) by making the finals he needed (a difficult task for older Turkish Angora males because their ears often pull off to the sides due to the jowl muscles males develop as they mature), but he actually made bread in every ring as he waited to be judged! He sat there making bread with one paw and then the other, back and forth and back and forth, curiously watching the judges and other cats while he waited for his turn. We've always liked to joke that he must know he could develop Carpal Tunnel if he didn't switch off! He wasn't quite his old playful self when the judges who did want to play offered him toys, but you can't blame Chinook for being a tad nervous after so many months without a single show. - A show hall really is a pretty overwhelming place even for people, let alone cats, much less older cats! So we really are thrilled with our Chinook. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Although the photos below were taken when Chinook was still immature at just over 7 months old, he looks very much the same. He is a super bright white with an extra soft coat. So soft that we had major static problems with his coat at the show we took him to in February. A coarser and/or heavier coat just wouldn't have gone quite so completely AWAY on us as his did. But a second show bath on Saturday night with a special rinse that I've learned will keep the static down and he looked great for Sunday. At any rate, to be able to clean up a whole male with just one bath after over a year without one so he was clean enough to make finals is good enough for me! The stud tail that most males develop after just a few weeks or months often requires repeated bathing with very harsh soaps to get it gone. But Chinook's coat really is special. Even dirty! At any rate, I will try to get some new pictures of him all grown up and fully mature to share with the world. Enjoy these for now and just now that he really does look very much the same... | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
